If you are a big enough nerd to be reading this blog you should also be reading Fretboard Journal. Fretboard Journal is a quarterly magazine dedicated to stringed instrument music, musicians and instruments. It is so lovingly produced that I can confidently say it is one of the highest quality music publications currently in print. Heavy paper, carefully edited, stunning photography-you get the idea.
The current issue has an article by guitarist Alvin Youngblood Hart on his perpetual quest for new-to-him guitars. Typically these are found in pawn shops and in need of work. With anything from minor repairs t0o major hacking he makes them into truly special instruments. He does not write about it in terms of mods or hacking, but the photos of his workshop and loving way he discusses his instruments make it clear. He is one of us.
Buy the current issue. That's an order.
